Global law firm Hogan Lovells’ government affairs & healthcare technology partner Cybil Roehrenbeck participated in a roundtable with U.S. Representatives Mariannette Miller Meeks (IA) and Mike Kelly (PA) for the Healthy Futures Task Force, Modernization Subcommittee rollout of its policy principles. The panel of speakers also included Michael Abramoff, MD, Founder & Executive Chairman, and John Bertrand, CEO, Digital Diagnostics. Rep. Morgan Griffith (VA) sits on the Subcommittee as well.
During the roundtable, Roehrenbeck noted that healthcare artificial intelligence (AI) tools are diverse and cross multiple specialty areas. She noted the clinical benefits of AI and discussed how the Medicare program may ensure access to AI tools, including assistive, augmentative, and autonomous AI, via its regulatory authorities.
Congressmen Brett Guthrie (KY) and Vern Buchanan (FL) launched the 17-member Healthy Future Task Force to modernize the American health care system and lower costs, keep Americans healthy, develop better therapies and cures, and provide Americans with more choices. The Modernization Subcommittee is one of five subcommittees of the Healthy Futures Task Force, which also includes the Treatment Subcommittee, Security Subcommittee, Affordability Subcommittee, and Doctor/Patient Relationship Subcommittee.
The Modernization Subcommittee’s aims include:
- Safeguarding and maintaining expanded telehealth access after the COVID-19 public health emergency declaration expires;
- Cracking down on fraud, waste, and abuse by incentivizing states to go after improper payments and utilizing state-of-the-art technology; and
- Expanding access to innovative, patient-centered technologies to improve patients’ well-being.
